The German Studies Association is the multi- and interdisciplinary association of scholars in German, Austrian, and Swiss history, literature, culture studies, political science, and economics. GSA holds an annual conference and publishes a scholarly journal, the German Studies Review. Members are generally professors and advanced students at universities and colleges in North America, although there are several hundred members in Europe and Asia. Membership is open to anyone. Member of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS).
The GSA’s main activity is the annual conference, where over 1,300 academics come together to share their research and collaborate on new and exciting projects. The Operations Director’s job is to make that conference happen. The OD supports our members as they submit through our web-based conference system, X-CD. Then, they assist our volunteer Program Committee with evaluating those submissions and the Program Director with scheduling. Working with the conference hotel, the OD coordinates exhibits, events, and receptions. At the conference itself, the OD manages the registration desk and works with hotel staff to make our attendees’ experience smooth and enjoyable.
Other responsibilities include updating the GSA’s website with Drupal, editing and assembling the biannual newsletter, and answering member questions with the help of our partner, Johns Hopkins University Press. This position reports to the GSA’s Executive Director.
The successful candidate will be able to work independently and manage their own time. Responsiveness and some flexibility in scheduling is required: particularly work-intensive times of the year include late January through mid-February, mid-May through early June, and the weeks leading up to the conference, which takes place around the first week of October. Work is otherwise remote.
Attention to detail is critical. Courteous and efficient customer service is integral to our work as an organization. The position requires travel at least three times a year: one day in May to visit the conference hotel, one day in August to visit Johns Hopkins University Press, and one week in late September/early October to run the conference.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Proficiency in proofreading/editing and composition (English).
Ability to lift/carry 50 pounds.
English/German bilingual preferred.
This is a part-time position, approximately 500 hours a year, $25/hour. Appointment is for a three year term, renewable at the discretion of the GSA Executive Board. Travel expenses are covered by the GSA, and a free GSA membership is included.
To apply, please submit a cover letter, CV/resume, and names of two references to David E. Barclay at firstname.lastname@example.org. Review will begin August 10, 2019 and continue until the position is filled.
