CfA: GSR Editor

The German Studies Association seeks a new editor or a self-nominating editorial duo for its flagship journal, the German Studies Review, a leading journal of interdisciplinary German Studies. The new editor(s) will succeed Dr. Katharina Gerstenberger, whose term concludes on May 31, 2026. The editor(s) will oversee the content of the journal and, in consultation with the editorial board, will make final determinations about that content and the journal’s scholarly direction. The journal appears three times annually in print. The editor(s) will remain at their home institution(s) and are expected to secure institution support, especially course releases and/or funds for editorial assistance, etc. Under the GSA bylaws, the editor(s) serve as also an ex-officio (non-voting) member of the GSA Board.

The search committee solicits applications, nominations (including self-nominations), and suggestions from across the globe. Applicants must demonstrate a solid publication record and editorial experience.

Job Description of the Editor:

The primary tasks of the GSR editor(s) are to oversee the production of three journal issues per calendar year. This includes:

  • Receiving, soliciting, and processing manuscripts, selecting reviewers, and sending out acceptance, rejection, or revision letters;
  • Guiding authors during the submission, revision, and publication process and coordinating the copy-editing and proof-reading stages;
  • Maintaining the files, including supplemental materials, for all past and forthcoming issues;
  • Planning and coordinating special issues, state of the field contributions, and designated special sections (including obituaries, forums, seminar reports, etc.);
  • Appointing an editorial board and communicating with its members about procedural and programmatic issues;
  • Appointing the book review editor(s) and overseeing the book review section;
  • Establishing editorial policies and day-to-day procedures concerning the work of the editorial assistant; and
  • Communicating with Johns Hopkins University Press on all matters related to the journal.

The GSR editors will also perform the following tasks:

  1. Participating in the deliberations of the GSA Board and the Executive Council; and
  2. Reporting annually to the Board and Executive Director as well as the membership during the annual general meeting.
Institutional Support:

Like past editors, the incoming editor(s) will be expected to negotiate teaching and service release time with their home institution(s) and secure additional support, such as an editorial assistant. Applicants and nominees must provide a letter of institutional support as part of their application (see requirements below).

Application Materials:

To be considered for this position, please submit the following materials to the chair of the search committee, Tiffany N. Florvil (tflorvil@unm.edu) NO LATER THAN February 6, 2026:

  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Overview of publishing record and previous editorships (journals, anthologies, book series, etc.), if applicable
  • Letter of institutional support from the home institution
Timeline:

The committee will review applications and notify finalists by late February. Interviews with finalists will be conducted in early March. We plan to extend an offer by the beginning of April, with the expectation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) among the incoming editor(s), their institution, and the GSA. The MOU must be finalized before allowing the incoming editor(s) to shadow the outgoing editor from April to May 2026. The official start date for the new editor will be June 1, 2026.
