GSA 2024 Mentoring Initiatives

Dear Members and Friends of the GSA,

Members of the newly formed Mentoring Awards and Initiatives Committee are excited to announce two new formats for this year’s conference and invite GSA membership to participate. Please join us for the roundtable Navigating the Job Market on Friday September 27 at 3.55 p.m. (in Georgia 5), which will feature short statements by seven participants with varied experiences and institutional affiliations. Issues this roundtable will consider include

  • career guidance and diverse career trajectories
  • institutional contexts, specificities, and expectations
  • advising practices and mentoring
  • application documents and process (including resources available to applicants)
  • advocacy

Our aim is not only to provide a forum for exchange but also to solicit member input on mentoring initiatives within the GSA going forward.

We are also implementing 1:1 mentoring sessions, based on successful models at allied organizations. We will schedule 30-minute time slots to be held Friday and Saturday between 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 2.00-3.30 p.m., and we ask colleagues (all ranks and career stages) to participate by entering their availability as mentors at this link: https://forms.gle/4tNbVApQZwoAUwCg8, and for those (all ranks and career stages) wanting to meet with a mentor to sign up here: https://forms.gle/zqc2QwtGicQrHi1H8 by August 1, 2024. Mentoring sessions are open to all!

For questions, please contact committee chair Ela Gezen (egezen@umass.edu).
